Every company in the world shares one fundamental goal:
Produce at the lowest possible cost, sell at the optimal price, and maximize profit.
It sounds simple in theory, but in practice, achieving this goal consistently across a business is extraordinarily difficult. From inventory management to procurement, pricing, and demand forecasting, every operational decision carries financial impact. Even small inefficiencies can add up to millions in lost revenue or wasted resources.
The Promise of AI, RAG, and Automated Machine Learning
With the rise of AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and automated machine learning, there’s a tantalizing possibility:
What if a company could leverage its ERP data — combined with external market data — to automatically optimize every operational decision that affects profit?
In theory, such a system could predict raw material prices, forecast demand, recommend optimal production schedules, and even guide pricing strategies — all in real-time.
However, in reality, building such a system is extremely complex:
- Integrating ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite is not trivial.
- It typically requires a full data warehouse or data lake infrastructure.
- Data must be cleaned, structured, and prepared for machine learning — often requiring months of work from specialized data scientists.
- Deploying automated ML pipelines and predictive analytics in production is a multi-month (sometimes multi-year) project.
In short, while the technology exists in theory, the cost, time, and complexity make it out of reach for most organizations.
Rethinking AI for Operational Profit
This led me to ask a simple but powerful question:
What if AI itself could simplify the process — making profit-maximizing insights accessible without the need for massive infrastructure or months of engineering?
Instead of building yet another complex data pipeline or heavy integration, the goal was to explore how AI could interact with enterprise systems directly, performing tasks in the simplest, most efficient way possible.
Introducing the First Experiment: AI-Controlled SAP GUI
As a first step toward this vision, I’d like to introduce an experimental prototype: an AI that can directly interact with the SAP GUI.
Here’s what it can do:
- Navigate SAP like a human user, including accessing T-codes.
- Extract ERP data directly from the GUI.
- Capture screens and interpret data intelligently.
- Do all of this without OData configuration, interface setup, or scheduled batch jobs.
This demo solves one of the biggest blockers in applying AI to operational profit: efficient and flexible access to ERP data.
While this is only a small part of the bigger vision, it’s a meaningful step toward a future where AI can handle much of the heavy lifting in data extraction and insight generation — without requiring months of integration or technical expertise.
Why This Matters
The implications of this approach are significant:
- Faster Proof-of-Concepts: Organizations can experiment with AI-driven insights without committing to large infrastructure projects.
- Lower Costs: Avoid expensive data lake setups, SI consulting, or multi-month ML projects.
- Scalable Insights: Once the foundation is in place, AI can learn and apply insights across different processes and departments.
- Strategic Focus: Teams can focus on high-value decision-making rather than data wrangling or manual report generation.
Looking Ahead
This demo is only the first step. Future experiments will explore:
- Automated predictive analytics across multiple ERP modules.
- Integration of external signals like commodity prices, supplier performance, or weather data.
- Fully AI-guided operational recommendations for profit maximization.
I call this overarching idea Profit Intelligence™ — the emerging science of connecting operational data, AI, and human intent to unlock a company’s full profit potential.
The ultimate goal is simple but ambitious:
Enable companies to make better decisions, faster, and turn ERP data into actionable profit insights — all while reducing waste and supporting sustainable operations.
A Personal Invitation
I’m sharing this early exploration because I believe AI can transform the way businesses operate, and there is much to learn together.
If you’re curious about the potential of AI in ERP systems, operational intelligence, or profit maximization, I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
